Grain bin rescue equipment presented

On May 2, the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Fontanelle, in partnership with the Adair County Farm Bureau Federation, presented the Fontanelle and Bridgewater fire departments with a grain bin rescue tube.  The grain bin rescue tube is a key device in saving lives during grain bin entrapments. Grain bin entrapments occur when a farmer or worker enters a bin or silo to dislodge clumps of grain during loading or unloading and becomes engulfed with the grain when it breaks lose.  According to Purdue University, the number of grain bin-related deaths dropped in 2015 to 25 from 34 in 2014.  The rescue tube allows the fire department to quickly respond by stopping the flow of grain toward the victim and alleviate the pressure from the grain.

Attending the presentation were Tyson Sickles, Jade Zimmerline, Denny Sickles - Fontanelle fire chief, Carl Ford, Darryl Christensen - Bridgewater fire chief, Danielle Steele, Elizabeth Baudler, Randy Caviness, and Pastor Stephen Broers.
